The Memory Tree {SOL 11.28.17}

When my kids were babies, I started an annual tradition of creating a photo ornament of each of them.

Every year, I would take a favorite photo (yes, we printed our photos -- at a store! -- in those days), hunt down a photo ornament, and hang it on our Christmas tree.

As the years passed and the ornament collection grew, I began looking forward more and more to putting up the tree. I loved looking at how cute the kids were, each ornament sparking a favorite memory and taking me back in time.

This year is the first year that both of my kids are away at school and my husband and I had to put our tree up alone.

But we weren't alone -- we had our collection of photo ornaments and their memories to keep us company.

  1. Lovely post! I loved reading about your photo ornament tradition, and I can just imagine how these photo ornaments were a delight as you decorated your Christmas tree! I bet your kids love them as much as you do!

  2. What fun to decorate the tree and see your kids through the years. Thanks for sharing those photos. I feel like I know your kids, but of course, I've never met them. One of my college roommates once told my kids that she had watched them grow up on her refrigerator!
    I'm getting ready to put up this year's tree and fill it with unbreakable ornaments since both grandsons will be here and they are 18 months and 11 months.

  3. I have a few of these, but I didn't think to do it every year. What a wonderful memory tree!

  4. Each ornament tells a story! I think this is beyond fabulous! You're children must love to look at their little selves each Christmas! Thanks for sharing your story and the pics of your own peeps!

  6. I love the ornaments as memories. My kids are 7, 9, and 11. I will need to make more of these ornaments for the one day they are out of the house.

  7. Last year, when she married in early December, one of the gifts I gave my daughter was the collection of her special Christmas tree ornaments. There were a few photo ornaments, but most were connected to places we lived, her changing interests through the years, or special events. I miss them for my tree, but I feel happy that she has them for their tree.
