Celebrating New Habits {8-02-14}

I always look forward to Saturdays to catch up on the celebrations of the week.  What's yours?
This week, I am celebrating some new behaviors that I am working hard to turn into new habits.  It is said that you have to do something 21 times to make it become a habit.  If that's true, then I'm almost there.

Walking:  Two weeks ago I went for a health analysis and almost choked when the nurse weighed me.  (It's a good thing she was standing behind me.) I try to look at weight as just a number, but this number was telling me I needed to move more.  So for the past 16 days, I have been walking anywhere from 1.5 to 3.5 miles a day. I love walking in the early morning when the air is still crisp and cool and there's no one else out. Sometimes, Rosie comes with me, but she hasn't been too keen on that since I accidentally forgot to remove her shock collar from the electric fence one day. (Ouch!!)
Writing:  I have been reading The Right to Write by Julia Cameron, one short chapter every day.  She writes a lot about Morning Pages, three handwritten pages written longhand first thing in the morning.  I have been trying really hard to develop this into a habit.  When I finish the day's Morning Pages, I tweet about it using #WriteEveryDay.  Care to join me???
Reading:  Donalyn Miller has inspired me to read as many kid lit books that I possibly can this summer to prepare for book recommendations for my students.  This week I finished Absolutely Almost, One for the Murphys, and the Brilliant Life of Gianna Z.

Thank you, Ruth, for continuing to host this weekly Celebration!

Have a wonderful week!

  1. Good habits are what it's about, I think, Jennifer. I love to walk, too, & have been walking every day, however, it was much more fun on the beach! I haven't read The Brilliant Life of Gianna Z, but loved the other two. So nice to have time to relax and read, isn't it?

  2. Wow- you are doing lots of great things. I'm going to look up your tweets. Don't know that writing book- will look that up too. And like you, I've been inspired by Donalyn Miller to read as much kidlit as possible this summer. Way to go with the walking. It's my favorite way to exercise.

  3. These are habits to celebrate! Just finished Absolutely Almost, I'm so sad I can't hang out with Albie anymore. I wish every teacher would take up the mission to read more.

  4. Good for you! Building new habits is hard to do. I love all three books you mentioned. I read Absolutely Almost this summer and I think it was my favorite book. I hope you keep on with your habits and enjoy all the wonderful things that come from them. :)

  5. So exciting that you're working on a daily writing habit. I love The Brilliant Fall of Gianna Z, one of my absolute favorite books. I read it aloud in the fall with my 6th graders.
